The BORCH Solo and Ensemble date change

Our administrators have given us the finals dates as the week of February 6th, so we will be definitely moving our BORCH Solo & Ensemble concert to next Tuesday, January 31. We usually do this concert before the festival (which is this coming Saturday), but with the circumstances of this past snow week, we will make do and go for Tuesday. We think that this will work well, as the concert usually showcases many of our solos and ensemble groups, not only those who elect to compete at the festival. We hope you can join us! You are in for a treat. Your students will know in the next couple of days if they are performing or not (meaning if they feel ready), and it will be a nice mix of 9th-12th graders. Tuesday, 1/31/127 pmSqHS Forum, Choir Room, Band & Orchestra RoomWe will explain when we begin, for those of you who haven't experienced this concert with us yet! But the gist of it is that you will be able to see "pods" of about 3 performances per pod, and they are a mix of Band, Orchestra and Choir students. For example, one pod might be Storm Men (singers), a saxophone quartet and a cello duo. Another might be percussion Ensemble, Storm Women, and Chamber Orchestra. The pods are happening simultaneously in the 3 venues, you choose one to see at a time, and then you are able to go to another venue (or remain in the one you're already at) for the remainder. We usually have 5 or so pods go, so that we can fit as many performers in as possible, and not have a 5 hour concert. :) We'll explain more clearly when we begin the concert. Last year was our first run at it and it turned out to be a very nice event!Again, we hope you can make it!Kay Reilly

Dear Choristers and Parents,

Here are some things that will happen because of the weather.

1. No matter what happens with school on friday the 20th there will be no early morning choir
2. the Faculty recital at the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowhship is postponed to next friday
3. the Solo and Ensemble concert is postponed until we find a good date for it.
4. we have a lot of catching up to do.

DC Goers Choir Update

Hi DC choir people!

Here is an update on financial information for the tour cost. We are looking pretty good at this point. Remember that if you are not up what you owe at this point, Don’t panic. Just be in good communication about where you are and lets make sure we have a plan in place to get you and your student to where you need to be to make the trip happen.

GENERAL COST INFORMATION:
As we are now into January, I wanted to send out some reminders about the payment schedule and send out some new numbers. We met with Susan Swan yesterday (ASB Office) and she has been keeping track of students' fundraising, getting some cost adjustments from the tour company, and has some numbers for us. The cost as of now from the tour company is:

Students- $1860
Chaperones- $1780

The higher cost is due to a fuel surcharge change as well as a higher cost for hotels.

These costs are with some of our free spots already separated out among the chaperones. This is also, however, not including the fundraising and community donations we’ve earned so far, which will bring it down a bit further for students especially. We will also be counting our upcoming recital and dinner auction event into further bringing down the overall cost, with the recital being specifically for the chaperones and the dinner auction geared toward the students. The students will have more fundraising opportunities coming up as well.

TIMELINES- PAYMENT & REIMBURSEMENTS:
Regarding timelines, the following is what was sent out in September for what families will be reimbursed and when:

1/1 - 2/15, families will get 75% back (minus the deposit)
2/15 - 3/1, families will get 50% back (minus the deposit) After 3/1, there will be no refund of any kind.

As of now, families owe the deposit ($200) plus 25%, so $665 total if someone decides they are unable to go. As of February 15th, it will be the deposit plus 50%. If you are unsure in any way, student or chaperone, please try to make your decision ASAP and please let me know. If I don't hear from you / your student, I will assume that you / your student are / is good to go! We are starting to finalize lists and send them in for final flight bookings and hotels, etc- so the sooner, the better! The end of March is getting closer and closer.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE SUGGESTION
And lastly, in case it is helpful, below is Chip's original payment schedule suggestion.

• $200 per person (non-refundable) ................. Due: October 1, 2011 • 25% per person, of total tour costs ($400.00) ................ Due: December 1, 2011 • 25% per person, of total tour costs ($400.00)................ Due: February 1, 2012 • Final Payment (remaining balance) ($700.00)............... Due: March 1, 2012

1. This Saturday the 10th is the annual Concert Choir Cabaret. The show starts at 7pm at Abundant Life Church Located at 3210 Meridan St, Just south of Cornwall Park. presale Tickets are ready to be checked out from Ms Swan in the ASB office for you to sell them to whom ever you can. 2. Willamette Chamber Choir tour.
On Tuesday Jan 10 at 7:30pm The Willamette chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. Wallace Long will be performing with SQHS Concert Choir and Sehome Concert Choir at the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship located at 1207 Ellsworth St Across from the Roeder building. They have asked for us to house a few of the College students for one night. Hosts will pick up their college students after the concert and deliver them to SQHS the next day fed and ready to go. Several students in concert choir have Volunteered for this and if your student has volunteered your home to house one of the Willamette students you will be getting an email soon. please consider making a dish for the potluck that will be happening at 5PM before the concert.

Holiday Port Festival Today

Dear Parents and students,

Coming home tomorrow is permission slip for the concert that we will be performing with WWU concert choir, this is a huge honor and will be a wonderful performance. Please consider attending this great event. If I could make it mandatory for parents I would. Students need to provide their own transportation to and from the WWU Performing Arts Center located at 516 High Street.

Below is our Itinerary for the event.

Tuesday November 8^th,

6:30 Students must arrive at the WWU performing arts center lobby

From there we will proceed to Lower Level 16 (the choir room) to put our bags and extra stuff there.

6:45 Warm Up LL 16

7:00 On stage in the concert hall for our run of our pieces.

7:20 concert choir joins to get our standing order finalized for the Bach. We run through the Bach

7:35 House opens and we return to LL 16 to get robes on.

8:00 Concert starts

9:15 Concert is over

9:30 students are ready for pickup

Parking is always an Issue up on campus. Make sure you arrange your travel to accommodate time for parking and walking to the Performing Arts Center. If needed I am happy to arrange car pooling.

Last Saturday was the best Choir retreat yet!!

we worked hard on music and got some different point of views from some amazing singers. I would like to thank Campbell Thibo and Jessica Lewis for their great work in helping us progress on our path to healthy and powerful singing.

Not only did we come away with some musical improvement but our motivation was boosted too. In our goal making session we constructed a linear framework for how we will get to the peak of our year, which is an incredible performance in Washington D.C.!

Also, it is nice to see the blue yarn around school and know that choir is always connected at SQHS.(ask your student about the blue yarn)

As usual thanks to the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship for the FREE use of their space. it is a great place to get away and do our work.

The tickets for the Lynden Music festival have arrived so you can check them out from Ms Swan in the ASB office. You make $7 on every ticket sold which is pretty darn good profit so get Crackin'

First Booster Communication of the Year

Hi to all Concert and Storm Choir Parents -

We enjoyed a very informative Booster Club Meeting last Thursday the 22nd, had a good turnout and we were able to secure volunteers for most of the needed positions.

We do however need someone interested in taking the lead on the Choir Program that is usually sold at concerts beginning in mid December. The previous Chairperson is willing to work together and teach the new chairperson everything they need to know and has said it was fun and easy :) This was done in a Publisher Program and printed locally. Ideally a couple of parents would work on this together. Please reply to this email with any questions you have and we will make sure to get them answered quickly...thank you in advance for your help with this.

Because the Choir Tour is planned for 3/29-4/4, with the first payment due to the ASB office by this Friday the 30th, we focussed a lot of our meeting around the topic of fundraising that can take place between now and February.
Fundraising ideas that were discussed, or are already underway:
- Dessert Auction - same night as the 1st concert - October 25th - Dianne Boyd

The Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship is directly across from the Roeder building (Bellingham School District administrative building) Off of Dupont St turn on to "I" street and take a right on Ellsworth. Park in the Gravel lot across from the church. Lunch will be provided by our awesome parent boosters!. Fun will be had by All!

The rep from “Music Celebrations International” (Our Tour Company) is coming to SQHS on Monday Sept 12 at 7pm to talk to us about our fantastic Washington DC tour that they have put together for us.

The 3 Music Directors have put a lot of effort into refining the tour based on your input from our meeting last spring and other meetings. We feel like this is a very exciting option and we are looking forward to presenting it to you. Attached is a PDF of the proposed itinerary and Payment plan for you to peruse and generate questions for us or the Rep on Monday.

Back to School night is the following night (Tuesday the 12th) which is a lot of meeting time for you but I hope you will make it so that you can participate as much as possible in the preparation for this great tour.

First day Of Boot Camp

Dear Choristers and Parents,

Our first day of boot camp this year was super successful considering we had a power outage and all. We got 2 pieces of music nearly learned and I bet that we will have a a couple more under our belt at the end of the day tomorrow.

remember the schedule for tomorrow is 10-4 at school and then the parent potluck is at 6:30 pm at the Woods's residence we are looking forward to talking about all sorts of things including tour and volunteering and fundraising and oh so much more.

Storm if you were not here today and you plan on being here tomorrow come an hour early so that you can get your folder put together before the rest of the gang gets here at 10.

we'll be working on "Chile con Carne" and the new madrigal piece tomorrow so lets get as much done as possible so we can go into the year with a head start.

Tour Update

Dear Parents and Students,

After delays due to various trips between the 3 of us, your SqHS music directors have finally met together and discussed at length the ramifications of our joint Spring Trip 2012. Since the cost for any European trip would be exorbitant, we have decided that we need to stay within the US. Therefore, we have chosen Washington, D.C. out of several choices around the country. We chose this venue partly for its obvious historical significance for our country. No matter what anyone’s feelings are about the current administration, or what is going on currently in D.C., to see the capitol of our country and witness the many landmarks that define our country will give the students a much different sense and hopefully more meaning to our own country’s history.

Also, we may be performing in adjudications with nationally recognized adjudicators. The details of the trip are in the making as I type. At this point, we are in touch with and working with 2 different tour agencies to see who can give the “most bang for the buck” as they say.

All we can say at this time is that the trip will start on Thursday, March 29, 2012, and will last about 5-7 days. It all depends on what all can be packed into the trip during the days we are given, the cost differences between 5, 6 or 7 days (added hotel, bus transportation, entrance fees, tour costs, etc.), and whether we feel the added costs are worth the extra days. The students will miss 2 days of school. The rest of the trip will be during Spring Break. We will plan on returning by April 5 or 6, in order for everyone to have a couple of days to rest before returning to school.

Just to give you a “ballpark” range, the cost for this trip could be around $1,300.00 - $1,500.00 per person. Nothing is set in stone as of yet, but there would be no harm in starting to save from this point forward. Please don’t hold us to these figures since tickets have not been secured.

Anyway, we just wanted to get this information out to you so you can make your family plans for during Spring Break

Looking Ahead for Tour

Dear returning choir Students and Parents,

What an incredible year we had this year!! I am really looking forward to next year now and anticipating a lot of change and advancement in a good way. I feel it is time for SQHS choir to move to the next level and I think this is the group that is going to get us there. I am already finding great music and planning events for our groups next year. Lets rock!

Now, in terms of our department trip next year- thank you so much for giving us good feedback from all perspectives, it has been very helpful. In considering this feedback, the three of us met and decided to “rewind” and try to take a different approach to our trip. Our number one goal is inclusion of all students, and we’ve reconsidered and decided together that perhaps now is not the best time for an overseas trip, with gas prices and the economy, etc.

So, we just wanted to let you know that we are rethinking this a bit, and are scheduled to meet together on Tuesday, and we will hopefully send out some more information and opportunities to vote on perhaps two completely places.

The three of us truly believe in the value of traveling and seeing the world from different views, and we will just try for a place slightly closer to home- in terms of miles and dollars.

SqHS choir program has two events coming up this Friday. (unless weather is an issue)

We will be singing at Fairhaven MS from 2:30 to 3. This concert will include Concert choir, Storm Singers and Choraliers.

I have arranged Transportation for concert choir but if there were a few parents that were available to drive for Choraliers that would be helpful.

Friday Evening Storm Singers is singing for a private function at the Fountain community church. at 7pm till 7:45 or so. Storm singers are expected to acquire their own rides to this event.

Things are looking good in the choir room at SQHS coming off of a great showing at Solo and Ensemble, we have a whoping 32 girls in choraliers and Concert choir is charged up with some member changes. Storm singers and ready for our upcoming activites such as Serenades (feb 14) Mt Vernon Jazz Festival (Feb 15th) EdCC jazz festival (march 5th) and a Private gig on (Feb 25th)

The Man choir is traveling to WWU on friday for a men's choral festival. their permissions need to be in by friday morning. Are there any parents that are willing to attend the event as a chaperone? It would be nice to have some help. the festival starts at 9 and goes till 2:30 in the Concert hall at WWU

Our Solo and Ensemble competition this year was so fun! every one did so well and I am so proud of our representation at the festival. Here are the results from my students that competed. Allegra Nichols - First Alternate!! You got beat out by a girl from Mt Vernon and a girl from Sedro Wolly. Not who you thought! and it looks like you just missed it. Congratulations!

Storm Women's Ensemble - First Alternate!! We beat out every one but M.V.!! Dang it Dang it Dang it! you guys performed sooooo well. I was very happy with our performance. They must have performed perfectly because you girls left it all on the stage today and didn't look back. Considering the several other Women's ensembles that were there and of high quality, we should feel very happy with that placement.

Alec and Jeremiah - First Alternate! you guys did a fantastic job today I wish I could have seen the group that beat you out.

Jake Cowin - First Alternate Piano! Nice work Jake!

Westy Sommerton - Second Alternate. I thought you had it tied up! I am looking forward to seeing the judges marks. In any case I thought you owned it up there.

If you are reading this you have actually spent the time to practice this evening. Thanks!

after you go over you part and make sure that you are solid. I would go onto You tube and check out the other versions that choirs have done of Jai Ho. Most of them are... well lets just say that I feel a personal responsibility to make a video recording of this that dominates the rest and doesn't go at LUDICROUS speed. It won't be that hard for us.

Sopranos Practice that High G in verduron. Accuracy and tone is much more important than Loud. Again it is not easy and I applaud your work that you have done already.

Basses and tenors double check the 4 part Doo section in Jai Ho (mm 81) work the transition from the preceding part.

My Sky Highs (Danielle, Cheyenne, and Allegra) your are starting to make lovley sounds up there. check the B Natural in MM114. you have been singing it as a B flat which is an easy mistake considering you sing a B flat in the passage before.

If you missed a practice sheet on the way out today there is one posted on the right under links and assignments just print it off and have your folks fill it out.

Dear Parents of Choir students,

I would like to formally invite you to the first Choir Parent Booster meeting to be held this Tuesday October 19th at 7pm in the Choir Room (F218) here a Squalicum. Roger Woods Has graciously stepped up to head the Dessert Auction coordination this year and this is a chance for us to get organized with this event and to start thinking about other events in the future. We are looking for someone to take over for Denise smith as our PTSA Lieson as her son graduates from the program this year.

I got to meet several of you at the back to school night that we had reciently but if you werent able to attend that even I hope you will be able to come to this event and see what choir is all about and how you can get involved to help us achieve our goals.

Here are some things I would like to discuss:

- Dessert Auction
- Choir Program for the year (creation of the program and Add sales )
- Caberet (we have a good thing going!! how can we make it beter?)
- Please email me with any thing that you would like to see on the agenda.

I am very VERY excited about this up coming concert on Tuesday Oct 26th at 7pm in the forum as well as the Winter Concert on December 15th.

We unveiled today to the entire music program that we will be performing selections from the Famous work "Carmina Burana" on the BORCH concert (that is Band Orchestra and Choir.) to be held December 15th. This will be a performance to remember! and I would like your help in making sure that we make an incredible showing for the community.

Dear Choristers and Parents,

Here is an update of things that have been going on in the choir room at SQHS.

All State / All North West Auditions went really well I would be surprised if we dont have a good number of students go this year. we find out in November who made it. Good luck to all.

Tomorrow Night is the Manhattan Transfer concert in lynden. Storm Singers will be working the concert and need to be there by 6:30 for orientation. we will be meeting at 5:30 at Syros Greek and Italian restaurant in Lynden. See you there!

The entertainment book Biltz scheduled for this saturday has been cancelled! Stay tuned for more details. Meanwhile Keep selling!

The WWU Womens Choral Festival is happening on Friday the 22nd from 9-2pm. You will be getting a permission slip soon with more details.

Our Choir concert is October 26 and we need Deserts. I will be having a Parent Meeting soon to organize this and other events this year.

First Two Weeks

Things are looking good!!

There is great Sound coming from the Choir room at SQHS!!

Concert choir has nearly learned all of the notes for 1.5 of the 3 pieces we are doing this Fall. (the hard stuff is yet to come!!). Don't forget about the retreat on September 25th. THAT IS NEXT SATURDAY! for more details click on the event in the calander above. We will be getting the majority of our stuff learned on this retreat and Judy Filibeck is coming from seattle to work with us! It is going to be a great day.

Choraliers is already singing in 3 and 4 parts and sounding good which is incredible. And... (drum roll please) Choraliers have been invited to sing on the HUGE concert that Bellingham Sings puts on every year under the direction of Ann McDonald. It will be December 10th and we will be singing with all of the "Bellingham Sings" as well as the "Vancouver Brass". Fun Fun Fun!

Mixed choir is starting to make wonderful noise as well espcially considering lots of them have never sung before. we are nearly all matching pitch and singing with great tone.

Then there is Storm... What a great bunch of singers we have this year. We are prepairing for the Manhattan Transfer concert on Thursday October 7th. (check the calander) I hope to have Java Jive and the MJ medly down by then. Check the links to the right to hear your part being sung for "Hide and Seek".

Entertainment books are selling like hotcakes. Keep those things rolling out the door. Remember the check point is Sept 27. try to have 5 sold by then. Some folks have already sold 10!

If you would like to see the incredible show STOMP in seattle at the Paramount on November 12 please make sure that Miss Reilly and I know so we can reserve a spot for you. It will be $40 dollars and well worth it.

Fundraising

Dear Parents,

Three things…

1. Sees Candy money should be turned in. Not the candy, Just the money. If your student has sold some candy don’t let that money just sit there with the potential of being lost. Turn it in.

2. Cabaret was a huge success. so huge in fact, that we have been asked to do an encore performance so people can bring back their family and friends that missed it the first time. I am working on scheduling this event here at SQHS in the forum tentatively for Thursday May 6th. Part of the criteria for this concert is that it is shorter and starts a bit earlier.

Choir Tour is a GO!!

After calling and emailing and letter writing and nail biting, we have aquired the amount of people needed to make the tour happen.

Sweet. Now lets make it happen! We have fundraising to do.

Caberet is coming and we are going to have a fantastic show! lets fill the seats at the North Shore venue. Tickets will be avaialibe for checkout and Sale at the ASB office on monday.

If you have any candy money that you have been haning on to get it in quick so we can see where we are.

Check your accounts with Mrs. Swan so you can see where you are and what you need to do meet your goal.

Most Importantly I need to make sure your paperwork is in and we are all signed up. we will take care of that on Monday.

The Reality of Tour

Dear Parents and students of Concert Choir,
I have finally caught up from the Contest and Concert push to take a look at our tour situation and it is looking grim. At this point we have 18 choir members that have paid a deposit either to ASB or have made a Deposit on line to ETS I have a few Registration slips that have been turned in to me but not enough to make the tour go. We need at least 40 to make the tour happen. Denise smith called several people a few days ago and found out that there were several families that were planning on going but had not filled any thing out or paid anything. We just need to find out who for sure is going and who for sure is not so we can make a decision and move forward.
Here is the nitty gritty: Our tour manager needs to pay a deposit to reserve tickets to our scheduled events (the Broadway show “Wicked” in San Francisco and the “Merchant of Venice” in Ashland) by April 9th. Once we do that we are committed to going on the tour. As it stands right now we can pull out and get our money back. I have asked the tour company to create a Plan B option for us if we do have to re organize but I would not like to consider this option especially if attendance, and not money, is our issue which is looking like it might be the case.
There are several students that have not informed me of their plan so in order to make a decision we will need a definite yes or no by the 8th of April. I know several of you are going to be out of town for the break but if I could get a response from you that would help me make a decision. Here is some information that might help you to make your decision.
Tour Date: June 3-6
Location: San Francisco (see the updated itinerary for details)
Cost Per student: $630
Fund raising options available now until the end of the year:
· Sees Candy: students make $27 per box of candy (Student would need to sell 23 boxes to pay for the whole trip)
· Cabaret concert on the 16th (a good projection if we do a good job promoting would bring us in $2000 which is about $50 per student)
· Writing personal letters to Business and family members. (Most students had a very negative reaction to the thought of writing letters and asking for money. I realize that economic times are difficult and that you may feel that It’s unethical to ask for money in this way for you to go on a trip. However, for the amount benefit you will get out of this experience and for the memories and friendships it will create and the way it will enrich your life, I have a hard time believing that family, friends and business would not be happy to contribute to your betterment as a musician and wholesome person in that way. And if they can’t well then they can’t and that is ok too. You may completely disagree with this opinion which is completely acceptable. That being said, I feel I need to at least offer it as an option.
· Selling Program Adds for Spring concert: Each add goes directly into the students account. (Business Card sized ad - $50, ¼ Page ad - $75, ½ Page ad - $100, Full Page ad - $200)
· I have acquired a busking License to perform at the Farmers Market on Saturdays. Come and sing and throw down a hat. You would be surprised what you might make.
· We have considered other ideas such as a Pancake Feed (which I think would be a hoot and we could call it Singin’ and Flingin’.) we could still organize these things.

If you are planning on not going, ask yourself if the deciding factor is the money / effort to raise the money. If all or even just a few of these options were played out to their potential even at this late time I feel like we could rally together and make it happen. If we were to rally I know even for those of you that are not able to make any of the payment we could make it happen for you. It just takes work and dedication.

IF you have any fundraising money out now Please get it in as quick as possible to Mrs Swan. So we can have a more accurate idea of where we are. Tuesday the 8th would be a good day for that.

I have been so impressed and uplifted by the musical growth and improvement in functionality of this year’s choir every moment seems to get better and better. After just a small preview of our cabaret performances I know it is going to blow people away. Our superior scores at festival reflect our hard work and dedication. I hope we can pull this tour together to put a great cap on the year and reward the seniors for all their hard work and dedication.

If it turns out we are not able to make the commitment to go on tour I will let you know when we return on Monday April 12.

What a great concert we had last night. As I mentioned in the concert, I felt it was the most prepaired and musically satisfying concert that I have had in my tenure here at SQHS. They keep telling me that things just keep getting better the more you do it, well it certianlly seems to be heading that way. Edmonds Jazz Festival

Good times were had by all at the Edmonds Jazz festival on Saturday. We sang beautifully and had a great clinic. It was good to see the other groups and great to see that Soundsation is still doing it right. Although it was a lot of sitting, I think it was well worth the trip.

Hey Storm Singers,

I am not coming in tomorrow. I fear that I have contracted what my daughter had last night. I will spare you the details but it is not pretty.

Concert choir,

I thought today's rehearsal went really well. Not perfect but better.
Lets not forget about the things that we wrote on the board and keep those things present in our minds while we are rehearsing.

For Monday:

Austin is Directing warm ups,
We will be writing in the dynamic changes that we need to execute into our music.
we will be writing in the translation of Latin Agnus Dei into our text for better comprehension.
We will be working on giving 110% all the time.
we will be looking over a new piece.
